1933 Adolphe Sax Tenor Saxophone -- Outstanding Player
This 1933 Adolphe Sax tenor sax was manufactured by the Selmer company. Henri Selmer purchased the rights to use the designs and name of the saxophone's inventor, Adolphe Sax, in the late 1920's from Adolphe's son Edouard. Selmer acquired the factory and tools, and retained much of the staff from Sax's Rue Myrha workshop as part of the deal, meaning that the hands that made this saxophone were likely the same ones that built saxophones for the Sax family. This saxophone represents a very interesting piece of saxophone history where manufacture was transferred from the Sax family to the Selmer corporation.
This saxophone is a great player as well as a highly collectable item. It has a warm and dark sound that speaks easily. The keywork is remarkably smooth and comfortable, especially for a horn of this age. It's quick and plays with a light touch.
This saxophone has been relacquered. The relacquer was an excellent job and will protect and keep this saxophone playable for many years without being too heavy or negatively affecting the tone of the instrument. It has been overhauled and repadded recently and everything is sealing well and playing great. The action on this horn is super light and quick and very comfortable. This is one of the best preserved Adolphe saxes we've seen.
This saxophone comes with a wooden hardshell case that has seen some miles but is in full working order.
Please note, this saxophone is not supplied with a mouthpiece.
This saxophone, along with our entire collection of vintage saxophones and mouthpieces, is available for play test in shop.
